How to Stay Hydrated During the Summer Season
Dehydration affects millions of Americans. It is estimated nearly 75% of us are chronically dehydrated which frequently results in hospital visits. And for many individuals, the symptoms of dehydration may mask more severe medical issues. Dehydration symptoms include:
- Fatigue
- Dizziness
- Irritability
- Dark urine
- Foggy memory
- Dry mouth or lips
- Peeing less than 4x’s daily
Yet, as common as dehydration is, it would seem staying hydrated is difficult to do. Fortunately, proper hydration can be attained with just a few changes to our daily habits. Consider these 7 ways to help you stay healthy, happy, and hydrated.
- Switch It Up – Coffee and alcohol are diuretics. If you will be consuming either, make sure to have at least the equivalent amount of water to prevent dehydration.
- Use a Tracker – Nearly every smart device has apps that will allow you to track your water intake. And many gamify the goal of staying hydrating making fun to drink your water.
- Check Your Pee – A hydrated body will produce pale yellow urine. If your urine is dark in color, your body is telling you more fluids are needed.
- Drink Tasty Water – Water can be, well, boring. Add some healthy flavor with lemons, cucumbers, or strawberries to make your next hydration break a tasty one.
- Drink Better Water – Water that tastes good will be easier to consume. If your tap water isn’t doing it for you, invest in a water purifier or filter system.
- Eat Water Filled Foods – Watermelons, cucumbers, and other fruits and vegetables can easily add ounces of hydration to your daily intake.
- Buy a New Water Bottle – Just as a new pair of running shoes can help motivate you to get out and exercise, a new water bottle can motivate you to drink more liquids.
If you or someone your love is suffering from severe dehydration or dehydration-like symptoms, consult a physician or visit your local hospital.
